Another week down, avoiding my wife. Only a lifetime to go.

Staying away physically kept her safe, but I grew more agitated the longer our separation dragged on. I’d snapped at my personal assistant on the phone and had needed to apologize more than once this week.

This wasn’t me. I was known for being firm and tough but never unkind.

I’d end this whole thing if Amy didn't need us to remain married. I wouldn’t survive another week, let alone years of this.

The shower wasn’t cutting it anymore.

I’d signed a contract stating I wouldn’t seek outside female companionship, but the joke was on me. Amy was the only woman I was allowed to have—the only one I wanted—but she also happened to be the only one I forbade myself from touching again.

It was enough to drive a man insane.

Sleep was eluding me, further adding to my aggravation. When I finally managed to fall into a state of restless unconsciousness, the doorbell rang, rudely awakening me before someone pounded on the front door. Checking my phone’s security app, I saw it was a delivery driver with a box.

Pushing the button accessing the microphone to the doorbell camera, I gruffly called out, “Just leave it!”

My irritation reached new heights when the driver said, “No can do, buddy. This one needs a signature.”

I was not his buddy. Throwing the covers off in anger, I stomped down the stairs. Wrenching the door open, I grabbed the signature tablet out of his hands without a word before thrusting it back at his chest and taking the box. Slamming the door in his face, I looked at the package, groaning when I saw it was for Amy. Even when she wasn’t here, she was driving me mad.

The box felt light, and I wondered what the hell she’d ordered from a European company called Arabella Reign. Placing the package on the kitchen counter where Amy would easily find it, I went back upstairs, all hope of getting any sleep today vanishing.

Lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, I heard when Amy returned home from work. Patiently, I waited as I listened to the sounds of her making dinner before she went upstairs to her room. The second I heard the master bedroom door latch, I bolted for my basement office.

Unable to focus on answering emails from “overnight” in Belleston, I pulled up a monotonous computer game. I needed something, anything, to distract me from the thoughts of Amy.

My phone buzzed, and I glanced away from the computer screen.

Speak of the devil.
